This is the 8th year the Anti-Racism World Cup has been hosted by the West Belfast Community of Lenadoon and our 7th year at Donegal Celtic FC. The Tournament is for 7 a side Soccer teams from across Ireland to play International visiting teams from Europe and beyond. The ethos of the tournament and associated events are Anti-Fascist, Anti-Racist and Anti-Imperialist.
“Belfast is looking forward to welcoming fans/teams from the Green Brigade (Glasgow Celtic), United Glasgow Football Club, Brigada 1874 (Aston Villa), FC United of Manchester, FC St. Pauli, Freak Brothers (Ternana), Dusseldorf, FC Kolectivo (Leicester), Derry City, Bohs and more this weekend at the home of Donegal Celtic in West Belfast.
Friday night’s historical theme is the 1930s. Historian Harry Owen will be speaking about the Blueshirts in Ireland and Spain followed by fellow historian Donal Fallon who be talking about anti-Communist streets gangs and groups of 1930s Dublin.
Saturday sees the highly anticipated 7-a-side football tournament with 32 teams registered.
At 1pm, there will be a talk about the current situation in Palestine from an activist who has recently returned from a 3 month visit. There will also be a photo exhibition and Q&A session.
At 7:30pm, the Green Brigade will be hosting a discussion on the suppression of politics at Celtic Park.
Weekend musical headliners are Glasgow’s finest The Wakes. An acclaimed anti-Fascist band who are just home after a triumphant gig in Hamburg.
Sunday sees a ‘GAA Against Racism’ hurling/gaelic competition organised by Sarsfield GAA club.”
