On a bright and breezy afternoon, Jordan Lockie started on the right of a four man midfield alongside Bradley Quinton, Stanley Muguo and Tyler Campbell, with Ryan Doyle slotting in at right-back. Town began well with a number of attacks, Lockie firing over in the 10th minute after a move down the left and good moves involving Stanley Muguo and Liam Hope just breaking down at vital moments. Canvey posed a threat on the break, Kevin Dobinson shooting over from a promising position.

In the 19th minute, Michael Kalu powered his way through the Canvey back line and was brought down outside the box. A yellow card was shown to Rob Bartley for his part in the incident and, from the consequent free-kick, Charlie Barlow attempted a block with his hands up and gave away a penalty. Liam Hope sent home ‘keeper Danzelle St Louis-Hamilton the wrong way with the spot kick.

A Ryan Doyle header from Brad Quinton’s free kick in the 26th minute was just over and Jay Curran missed a chance for Canvey soon afterwards. Michael Kalu was posing some problems for the Canvey back line, but his control let him down in the 38th minute when he couldn’t quite keep the ball going off for a goal kick after a promising move down the right. As half-time approached, John Easterford headed over from a corner for the home side.

Soon after the restart, Campbell had a shot saved low down by the keeper, and a couple of crosses from Lockie and Kalu were headed clear. Canvey came back into the game strongly and eventually equalised after 62 minutes, impressive substitute John Sands curling in a left-footer which gave McDonald no chance. Soon afterwards Anthony Thomas drove in a free kick but to the relief of the Town defence, it struck one of his own teammates and was cleared. Canvey were in the ascendancy at this point, although there were chances for Town, not least when Tyler Campbell latched on to a flick on by Hope, but he shot over when well placed. Just as it looked as though Town’s endeavour would secure a point, Marlon Agyakwa secured a win for the Gulls with another fine curling effort beyond the reach of McDonald. Town have very limited recovery time with the visit of Wingate and Finchley to the QEII Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.
