A flare was let off, missiles were thrown and five people were arrested at the Hamilton v Motherwell tie, as a police helicopter hovered above Accies’ New Douglas Park.
Fans claimed stewards and police “lost control” as a minority of rival fans confronted each other in a corner of the stadium.
Motherwell fan.. claimed there was “severe overcrowding” in the away end, with 100 Well fans forced to stand.
Another fan told how rival Accies and Well fans confronted each other on the way into the ground.
He said: “I feared there would be violence there and then.”
But Accies chairman Les Gray said he never saw any trouble, adding: “It was a case of lively teenagers just shouting and bawling at each other.
“There were only two people removed from the ground. The Motherwell fans brought a lot of noise and colour.
“The supporters were lively and goading each other but my kids do that in the playground.
“The incident with the flares does not look very good because that is dangerous but I wouldn’t want to comment on another clubs’ fans.”
Motherwell declined to comment.
