Spirit of Shankly statement on the forthcoming Everton v Liverpool derby – Sunday 4 Oct 2015
As part of our ongoing campaign for affordable football, both Spirit Of Shankly and The Blue Union have written to our respective clubs to ask them to support us in this and enter into a reciprocal agreement for this season’s derby matches. The letter below was sent to both clubs last week and we would urge them to enter into such an agreement, which would recognise the importance of away supporters to both clubs and show appreciation of their loyalty.
Supporters from both Liverpool and Everton have enjoyed a unique relationship over the years and stood side by side on many occasions. This has been demonstrated recently when fans from both clubs have campaigned alongside each other for cheaper tickets, as part of the FSF ‘Twenty’s Plenty’ campaign.
It is recognised throughout the game that supporters at both clubs have been at the forefront of campaigning for cheaper tickets and that both clubs have engaged with supporter groups on this issue. Both The Blue Union and Spirit Of Shankly would welcome further co-operation between the clubs to reward loyal fans in an ‘affordable derby’.
We applaud the Premier League’s “Away Supporters’ Initiative”, which sees every club set aside £200,000 per season to improve away attendance, and note that many clubs have enhanced this scheme by entering into reciprocal ticket price agreements for away fans. Away supporters at both clubs thus benefit from cheaper tickets in recognition of the valuable contribution they make to both the atmosphere and spectacle at games.
Reciprocal deals have proven to be very popular amongst travelling fans. During 2014/15 the FSF found that reciprocal deals were offered by half of the Premier League’s clubs at 18 different fixtures, saving 30,548 fans a total of £306,820 – an average of £10.04 per fan. We believe such an agreement between Liverpool and Everton would recognise the magnificent following enjoyed by our clubs.
