Grays Athletic 1-0 Enfield Town FC
Saturday 21 November 2015
Ryman League Premier Division
Town’s poor run at Mill Field, Aveley, continued on Saturday as they returned home pointless after a fruitless afternoon in wintry temperatures.
The swirling wind and bumpy pitch did nothing to help flowing football, and there was very little incident of note in the first half. The all-important goal arrived in the fifteenth minute when Joe Stevens won a corner for Town on the left. But Grays back line then headed the dead-ball clear, Stevens slipped to concede possession and, from a subsequent through ball, Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson had time and space to beat Nathan McDonald.
Mark Bentley was cautioned after he had brought down Mickey Parcell after 22 minutes and, two minutes later, a dangerous cross from Dernell Wynter was headed clear by Sean Cronin. Then, just before the break, a foul by Jandir da Cruz near the touchline on Town’s right produced a moment of danger for the visitors, but Nathan McDonald punched clear.
Half-time: Grays Athletic 1 Enfield Town 0
There was more urgency about Town’s play in the second half, and they were generally helped more by the direction of the wind, although a number of set pieces were overhit. On 52 minutes, da Cruz had a chance in a crowded box from a Samir Bihmoutine corner, but he couldn’t quite get a shot in.
Town had a let-off in the 54th minute when Fortnam-Tomlinson hit a post after a breakaway attack and then, on the hour mark, McDonald had to make a good save from Dumebi Dumaka. Harry Ottaway was off target a couple of minutes later, and luck was on Grays’ side when Joao Carlos sliced an attempted clearance perilously close to his own crossbar.
Tyler Campbell came on for Dernell Wynter and Bobby Devyne replaced Joe Stevens as Town pressed for a point, but it was not to be, and indeed that man Fortnam-Tomlinson could have extended the hosts’ lead but he was off target as the match entered its closing stages.
